California native Matt Eaton is a self-taught painter who has been developing his practice for more than three decades while also working as a gallery owner and curator. His paintings are rooted in an enduring fascination with the natural world: deserts, forests, coastlines, changing light, and the vastness of remote landscapes. Rather than depicting specific places, they distill the atmosphere and emotional residue of time spent outdoors into layered, intuitive compositions that balance bold color, organic forms, and moments of chance. Eaton approaches each painting as a process of discovery, allowing images to emerge through accumulation, revision, and instinct. He takes the work seriously, but himself considerably less so.
